 Journalism Scholarships In Germany:

DAAD and the distinguished institute Freie Universität Berlin  have jointly offered this distinctive Summer Internship program to exceptional young students of journalism in order to provide chances to submerge themselves in the culture, society, political attitudes and values in Germany. DAAD and Freie Universität Berlin are in collaboration providing this program in Germany for young journalism students.

Objectives of Scholarships:

This program contains two corresponding parts. The students will have to spend first six weeks at the International Center for Journalism  of the Freie Universität Berlin; here they will be able to increase the intellectual understanding of the German culture, politics society and the contemporary structure of media and operational conditions of German journalists. Considering these academic building blocks, the candidates consequently will start their intensive internship for five continuous weeks with renowned German newspaper, magazine (online), radio and TV station, press and PR agency. The participants will do an educational tour of one week with the young recruited journalists who belong to former Soviet Union’s independent states. The mission is to enhance the mutual understanding and deepen the German-American and Canadian relations.

Scholarships Benefits:

These scholarships are not full time 2 years scholarships. As these are work based bursaries for graduate level students, the scholarships will be provided for about 11 months. Total number of scholarships are always different each year. However, the number of scholarships were 10 last year. Number of awards can stay the same as of last year or it can also change, depending on the budget and number of awards available to DAAD.

  • The participants should be registered either in the school of journalism in Canada or United States of America, or the candidates should show their deep interest in journalism or interested in public relations that includes: University newspapers/internships.
  • The candidates must have practiced practical journalism.
  • The scholars program is mainly planned for students of undergraduate degrees; however graduate students, recent graduates and senior graduates might also be eligible to apply.
  • The candidates ought to have German language skill as a minimum equivalent to the level of “advanced intermediate”.
  • The candidate ought to have a keen interest in German affairs, such as an understanding of current affairs, coverage of political news of Germany Canadian and American media,
  • The candidates ought to have knowledge about German culture, society and history.
  • This program is divided into three parts, which are: 1-6 weeks, week 2 and week 7-11
  • The staff of this program, internXchange will supervise the participants at the International Center for Journalism.

Required academic Qualification:

  • Undergraduates
  • Recent graduates
  • Senior graduates


The grants for students include:

  • The selected 10 candidates will be given monthly financial aid of about €650
  • DAAD would give accident and health insurance for the scholarship awardees.
  • 5 candidates would be offered to take part without grant in this program.
  • The candidates would stay in the residence halls of students in Berlin during their stay in Germany.
  • However, the candidates should have to bear the costs of housing and travel expenses to and from Germany themselves.
