Japanese Government Scholarships for International Students

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japanese Government is offering the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarships for the academic studies in Japan to international students who are interested in understanding the Japanese language, the Japanese affairs and the culture of Japan. The purpose of these scholarships is to promote mutual understanding and deepening friendly ties between Japan and other countries through the application of advanced knowledge regarding Japan’s language and culture. The candidates must be undergraduates at non-Japanese universities doing their majors in the related fields to the Japanese languages or Japanese culture.

Scholarship Benefits

  • The Allowance:

Each scholar will be provided with 143,000 yen (Research Student course) and 144,000 yen (students registered in a Master’s program or professional degree program), or 145,000 yen (students who are registered in a doctoral program). The additional monthly remuneration of 2,000 or 3,000 yen might be offered to those who want to undertake their research studies in specified chosen fields. But, these amounts would reshuffle according to the annual budget of Japan. However, the scholarship will not be given to those scholars who take long leave from university.

  • The Transportation costs:

According to the route selected by MEXT the beneficiaries will be provided with an economy-class airplane ticket for the international airport adjacent to their home address to the Tokyo International Airport.

However, the Expenses like inland transportation from the home address of beneficiary to the international airport, airport usage fees, airport tax and special taxes on travel, the inland transportation within Japan are not included.

  • The Tuition Fees:

The Japanese Government would bear the expenses of the fees for the entry examination, matriculation, and tuition at the universities.

Eligibility Criteria:

(1)  Nationality:

The candidates must have the citizenship of a country that has the diplomatic relations with Japan. The Japanese nationality holder would not be eligible. The Selection process would be taken place at the Japanese Embassy / the Consulate General situated in the home country of the candidates.

 (3) Must be able to Understand Japanese Language:

The candidates must be able to understand Japanese language sufficiently in order to get the education at a Japanese university.

(4) Health:

The candidates must be mentally or physically fit.

The applicants are advised to contact for further details the Japanese embassy/ consulate general in their home country.

The deadline of the applications varies depending upon the countries. But mostly it is around March-May each year.
